As an interventional stroke neurologist, my research has focused on improving the outcomes of endovascular therapy of cerebrovascular disorders through optimizing selection and threatments using available and novel imaging and therapeutic techniques. My areas of research interest include endovascular thrombectomy, brain aneurysms, carotid stenosis, and cerebral arteriovenous malformation. I am also interested in studying selective brain hypothermia and its neuroprotective effects.

Dr. Seby John

Dr Seby John is Consultant, Vascular Neurologist and Neurointerventional Surgeon at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi. He is currently Clinical Associate Professor of Neurology at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, USA and Khalifa University College of Medicine, UAE. Dr John has extensive experience in the Medical and Interventional Management of Cerebrovascular Diseases. He is an active researcher and has been an investigator in numerous international cerebrovascular clinical trials. He has to his credit, more than 75 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters in the field of stroke and neurointerventional surgery. He is board of directors of MENA-SINO (Middle East North Africa Stroke and Interventional Neurotherapies Organization) and the UAE Vascular Neurology Chair for Mission Thrombectomy 2020+. He is an active reviewer for multiple journals, and is on the editorial board of Clinical Neurology and Neurosurgery.

Dr. Victor C. Urrutia is Professor of Clinical Neurology, at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
Director, Sheikh Khalifa Stroke Institute; Director, Comprehensive Stroke Center at The Johns Hopkins Hospital; and medical director with Johns Hopkins Medicine International. Founder and director of The Global Center for Organized Stroke Care.
Developed and implemented the acute stroke emergency medical systems routing for suspected LVO in Maryland.
Led the organization of certified stroke centers in Colombia, Panama, and Bermuda. In Bermuda, developed a transoceanic tele-stroke program.
Member, Executive Committees of MT2020+, and WSO/SIECV Certification of Stroke Centers in Latin America.

Prof. Andrew Demchuk

Dr. Andrew Demchuk is a Professor in the Department of Clinical Neurosciences for the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary. He is also a stroke neurologist and Director of the Calgary Stroke Program, Alberta Health Services.

Dr. Demchuk received his undergraduate degree in 1989 from the University of Regina, Saskatchewan. He then went on to complete his medical degree (with distinction) from the University of Saskatchewan in 1993, followed by his residency in neurology from the University of Calgary (1993-97). Dr. Demchuk completed a fellowship in cerebrovascular disease (1997-99) from the University of Texas-Houston, under the direction of Dr. J.C. Grotta.

Dr. Demchuk’s primary research interests focus on vascular imaging, where he is trying to establish target populations for new stroke treatments by selecting patients based on imaging tests performed in the emergency setting.

In addition to his research and clinical activities, Dr. Demchuk is a member on a number of local, national, and international committees. He is the past board chair for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta, NWT, and Nunavut and member of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Stroke Consortium. He is currently a member of the Scientific Committee of the European Stroke Conference.

Throughout his career he has received a number of awards, including the Michael S. Pessin Stroke Leadership Prize from the American Academy of Neurology (2003), and the A Keith W Brownell Neurology Teaching Award for resident teaching (2006). He currently holds a scholar award from the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research (AHFMR).

Prof. Dr. Ashfaq Shuaib

Dr. Ashfaq Shuaib received his undergraduate medical education at Khyber Medical College in Pakistan, obtaining his MBBS degree in 1980. Thereafter, he did post-graduate training in Internal Medicine and Neurology at the University of Calgary between 1983 and 1988, followed by specialized training in cerebrovascular research at the University of Western Ontario and Duke University Medical School in Durham, North Carolina.

He returned to Canada as an assistant professor in Medicine and Neurology at the University of Saskatchewan in 1989 and rose rapidly through the academic ranks to be appointed full professor in July 1995. In addition, he held the position of program director in the Division of Neurology between 1990 and 1995, supervised numerous research fellows and graduate students and was the Director of the Saskatchewan Stroke Research Centre and Director of the WHO Centre.

He joined the University of Alberta as Professor of Medicine and Director of the Division of Neurology effective September 1, 1997. In July 2007 he stepped down as Divisional Director and remains Director of the Stroke Program. His major interest is in the understanding of the basic mechanisms of cerebral ischemia and clinical trials in cerebrovascular diseases. He has published over 450 articles in peer-reviewed journals and his research is funded by the CIHR, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta, NIH, Alberta Innovates and the industry. He is the co-chair of the NIH funded conference on collaterals and the stroke section of CONy. He has served on the editorial board of the Stroke, Neurohospitalist, J of Neuroscience (Pakistan), Post-Graduate Journal (Pakistan), Heart Org. and Associate Editor of Frontiers in Neuroscience and Faculty F-1000.

Dr. Niaz Ahmed is an associate Professor of Neurology, Karolinska Institutet and Deputy Chief Consultant at the department of Neurology, Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden.

He is a co-founder, Vice Chairman, member of the Scientific Committee and Board Member for the SITS International (https://sitsinternational.org). He is a co-chair of ESO- Karolinska Stroke Update Conference’ (http://eso-stroke.org). He was the coordinating researcher for SITS-MOST and since 2007 work as a Senior Researcher at Karolinska Stroke Research Unit and International Coordination Centre for SITS. He is a Vice director of the project ‘Fighting Stroke’ (http://uppdragstroke.org/en/forskarteamet). He is a member of ESO and ESO Conference Committee 2018. He is coordinating several ongoing and upcoming projects and coordinating investigator of Phase-III, multicentre, efficacy randomised controlled trial (I-Stroke II). He is author of more than 60 original articles, several book chapters and accepted abstracts for presentation at international conferences. Have co-supervised 3 doctoral students who defended thesis and currently supervising 4 doctoral students.
