Dr. Amal Al Hashmi

Amal Al Hashmi BSc, MD, FRCPC is a senior consultant neurologist and Chief of the central stroke unit in Oman. She is the founder and president of Oman Stroke Society. Dr Al Hashmi completed her post-graduation training in neurology at McGill University; Montreal Canada; and she holds the Canadian board in neurology. She is the first adult female neurologist in Oman. Dr Al Hashmi was the founder of stroke programs in Oman. She established 4 stroke programs and was engaged in numerous stroke nurses and doctors training modules and programs. She is also a committee board member of MENA SINO and chief of accreditations of stroke unit/ centers initiatives at MENA SINO. She also a trainer and examiner for both MD and residency program at Sultan Qaboos University and Oman Medical Speciality Board. She was the neurology rotation supervisor 2014-2017 and currently is a research supervisor at Oman Medical Speciality Board. She served as deputy of Oman Medical association and was the first female to hold this position 2013-2016. She was an organizer, speaker and moderator of numerous regional and international conferences. Dr. Al Hashmi is interested in research and has numerous publications in stroke and other fields of Neurology. She is also an associated editor at both journal of vascular and intervention Neurology (JVIN), and Ecronicon Neurology (EC neurology) journals. In April 2016 she was appointed by His majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said the Sultan of Oman (Royal Decree number “24/2016”) as Human Rights Commissioner at the Oman Human Rights Commission she served as commissioner for 3 years form April 2016 –April 2019.

Dr. Athari Salmeen obtained adult neurology residency and clinical stroke fellowship from Vancouver, UBC, Canada. Dr. Athari is a Stroke Neurology Specialist and Head of Stroke Committee at Jaber Al-Ahmad Hospital. She is also a member of thrombectomy team in Kuwait. She is clinical tutor and assistant program director of adult neurology residency in Kuwait.

After his medical studies in Sfax faculty of medicine (1979-85), he was resident at the national institute of neurology in Tunis between 1986 and 1988. He obtained a research master in neurosciences in 1990 from the university Pierre Marie Curie in Paris (France). He was assistant-professor than professor of neurology in Habib Bourguiba university hospital in Sfax. In 1996, he was nominated as head of the department of neurology in Sfax faculty of medicine. He assumed several responsibilities in his hospital (President of the medical board of Habib BOURGUIBA University hospital (2008-2013); Director of Clinical Investigation Center (CIC) of Habib BOURGUIBA University hospital since 2015…). He is member of scientific board, Sfax Faculty of Medicine since 2001 and President of Tunisian Society of Neurology between 2002 and 2006. He was the President of the Pan Arab Union of the Neurological Societies (PAUNS) from 2017 to 2019. His fields of interest are inflammatory diseases of CNS, Neurogenetics and neuromuscular disorders. He participated to the publication of about one hundred peer reviewed scientific papers.

Dr. Mohammed Alkuwaiti is an Assistant Professor and Consultant Vascular Neurologist at the Department of Internal medicine in the College of Medicine and Health Sciences at United Arab Emirates University. His clinical practice is based at the Tawam hospital, the regional stroke center of Alain city in UAE.

Following completion of his medical school training at UAE University he travelled to Montreal, Canada where he completed Adult Neurology residency training at McGill University (2016). He later also completed Acute stroke clinical training (2017) and Stroke-Net Fellowships (2018) at the University of Minnesota, in Minneapolis, United States. Dr. Alkuwaiti is an active member in local stroke committees, including the Department of Health stroke committee and at SEHA Stroke Task force committee.

He Chairs the National Institute of Health Subspeciality (Emirates board) Neurology Committee. He is interested in secondary prevention and acute Stroke research. He is currently working on Stroke related projects in collaboration with UAE University and Sheikh Khalifa Stroke Institute.

Dr. Naveed Akhtar is a Senior Consultant Neurology at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), Doha, Qatar, Assistant Professor at Weill Cornell Medicine – Qatar, and Honorary Faculty at Qatar University (College of Medicine). He is actively involved in the teaching and training of Medical Students, trainee residents and fellows at within several departments at HMC. Dr. Naveed take special sessions of residents for Arab Boards Examinations. I have received multiple appreciation and excellence in teaching awards from WCM in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2013. He also received “Award for best Publication” in 2015 and 2016 from Medical Research Council- Academic health Systems, HMC.

2005- Onwards He has published more than 92 peer reviewed articles and manuscripts. He holds 22+ years of experience and has been awarded as Fellow of European Stroke Organization, and American Academy of Neurology.

He was the Lead Expert, worked with a panel of physicians in building up the National Stroke

Guidelines for the State of Qatar in 2017.

As a professor of neurology at the Faculty of Medicine of Fez since 2003, we have tried all these years by all means, to make neurology specialty more accessible and more attractive. Many thesis work has been devoted to the illustration, simplification and the mapping of different key concepts of neurology and made tools widely used by students of our faculty and even other faculties of the kingdom to better learn neurology.

Thereafter, we had to tackle a major domain: Neurophysiology.
